In April 1993, the original weatherboard station building on the western platform was damaged in a fire and later demolished.〔(Fire damage at Awaba railway station ) Lake Macquarie City〕〔"Infrastructure" ''Railway Digest'' May 1993 page 199〕 It was replaced by the present lighter-weight structure.
